India won the Nehru Cup again

India won the Nehru Cup for the second consecutive time by defeating Syria 6-5(1-1) in the penalty shootouts at the Ambedkar Stadium Stadium in New Delhi on Monday. Goal-keeper Subroto Paul, who saved three penalties to become India’s saviour, was awarded the man of the match.

Match was scheduled at 6:30pm in the evening. I kept last time experience in my mind, I, one my colleague & one Dwarka FC teammate reached the stadium around 4:20pm. We had already told our bosses in the morning, not to stop us as we are not going to stop anyway. We pushed-off by 3:00pm to become a part of high profile international match. We sat on the top of the central line from where we could see the best view. People started coming-in and by 5:30pm, stadium got filled in at full capacity of 20,000. People who did not succeed climbed on the walls, toilet roofs, tents, Ferozshah Kotla stadium balconies, trees, stair-case, lamp post etc. Since we were on the top row, I could see around 8000 people were still waiting outside on the main Bahadurshah Zafar marg & Rajghat roads to get in but police were not allowing them. Fans showed their patience for 30-40 minutes but just before the half-time they gave up. They broke the gate no.8 and moved-in like as if lava coming inside. It was almost stampede. So much of enthusiasm that too on a weekday (Monday), seriously AIFF, MCD, Delhi Police, DSA officials and even I would have not thought of.

Anyways, match started right at 6:30pm. Both the teams had something in their mind. India started with an attacking game. India had cleared their intentions in very first minute, when Bhutia had a chance to score but somehow Syrian survived. This made Syria shattered.
Indian captain Baichung Bhutia was handed yellow card in the first half of the game. However, the first half ended without a goal. India were awarded a free kick soon after the commencement of the second half when skipper Bhutia was fouled. But the free kick taken by Steven Dias was stopped by the Syrian goal-keeper.
During 90 minutes, both the teams got equal chances but none of them actually scored and match moved in extra time of another 15-15 minutes halves. In the 114th minute, India were granted a free kick because of a foul committed on Indian captain Baichung Bhutia in the extra-time and Rennedy didn’t let the opportunity & Houghton's faith go waste as his kick swung from right to left to beat the Syrian captain and goalkeeper. Everybody in the stadium started celebrating India's victory as if we have won the world cup. Syrian had just 6 minutes to survive and they proved themselves once again why they are up by 65 FIFA rankings. Syria scored the equaliser in the very last minute (119th) to dash India’s hopes and the final went into penalty shootouts. Pin drop silence spread all over the stadium. Those (including me) who were once celebrating, started cursing indian defence abusively. Fans started praying irrespective of religion.

In the penalty shootouts, Climax scored the first goal for India in the penalty. Rennedy took the second penalty and missed as he hit the pole. (Rennedy became Hero to Zero in a span of 10 minutes). India goal-keeper Subarata Paul revived the home team’s hopes as he stopped the second penalty diving to his left. Sunil Chhetri again gave India the lead by scoring in the third penalty. Again Indian goal-keeper stopped the Syrian penalty to retain the lead. Mehraj missed the penalty would have given India the title. Syria again levelled again by scoring in the fourth penalty. Sukumar Singh again scored to give India the lead. And, finally when Subarata saved third penalty, everybody jumped over the grills and rushed into the ground to hug our hero Subarata Paul, Bhutia & other teammates. In my entire life, i had never seen such craze for indian football. I literally fell into tears.
I started getting congratulating SMS/calls from Preeti, Vinod, Gaurav, Amit, Anurag, Shikha and my Dwarka FC team mates, that made me more emotional ;-)
I wish I could have chance to meet my ideal Sunil Chhetri (jersey # 11) once. But the way our Delhi police chasing & bashing those intruders, I really got scared :P

Later, somehow we managed to jumped inside and had fun same as what a small school kid could do in his school-time days. I clicked pics during presentation ceremony, with Mahesh Gawli, Coach Bob Houghton and others.

I must say, Coach Bob Houghton’s decision to rest key players in the last inconsequential league match against the same opponents paid dividends as the senior players came afresh for the final encounter of the five-nation football tournament. It was a heated, tensed and keenly contested encounter in which the referee had to intervene many times to calm down the players. The heat was not limited to just the players. The Syrian coach Fajer Ebrahim lost his cool in the 60th minute when two off-sides were given against his team in quick succession. He got into an argument with the linesman and that led to India coach Bob Houghton gesturing towards the Syrian camp while pointing his fingers and saying something.

In 89th minute when an off-side was again given against Syria, a frustrated Ebrahim argued with the linesman again. This time Houghton was only staring at him without saying anything. In the extra time, a support staff of Syria was sent off for arguing with the linesman following an ugly incident in which Bhutia was tackled from behind by a Syrian player which led to some pushing and shoving.

Finally "ALL's WELL WHEN ENDS WELL". We had something to celebrate as we were with the winning side.

This win was certainly a tight slap on the face of Syrian Coach 'Fajer Ebrahim' who commented on India that he (Syria) could win against Indian with merely seven players on the field.

LONG LIVE INDIAN FOOTBALL !!!!! Our blessings are always with you !!!

Nehru Cup Final today (31-08-2009)

Indian Football lovers, it is time for us to cheer our football heroes. Nehru Cup Football 2009 final is today at Ambedkar Stadium, Delhi at 6:30 PM IST. Match will be played between India and Syria. Syria is a strong team and is yet to loose a match and even they are yet to concede a single goal during the whole torunament. Their defenders are stronger while Indian defenders are relatively weak. India certainly have to raise the bar and play to their potential. Strikers like Biachung Bhutia and Sunil Chetri are capable of breaking Syrian wall with the support from midfielders like Steven Dias, Sur Kumar Singh, NP Pradeep, Climax Lowerance.

India's advantage will be the huge home crowd support it gets at Ambedkar Stadium. From the time I have seen started football matches at this venue, India has never lost. Football lovers of Delhi are anxious to watch this match at the stadium which always proved to be lucky for host side. Those who could not come at the stadium they could watch the final match live at ZEE Sports tv channel.

Nehru Cup Football torunament is an international tournament and it is getting popular year after year. International sports media and TV channel are also covering the tournament. Because of huge popularity of the Nehru Cup, sponsors like ONGC, Airtel, Hero Honda are also coming up.... and as a football lover i hope it will increase further.

For your information, ticket can be found at the stadium and prices are Rs 20/- Rs 30/- and Rs 50/- . Even though I would be having the passes, I would love to go and sit opposite the pavillion with the local public as I just cant sit with the bureaucrats and other official who just come to cheer Indian side with a cosmetic smile.

Guys, please reach the stadium by 4:30pm. Last time (2007) I just managed to moved in...

AIFF to sign 25 players exclusively for Team India, under national team project ''Goal 2011'

The AIFF has announced its plan to select and sign 25 players exclusively for the national team until the AFC Asian Cup 2011. The list of 25 players selected by India coach Bob Houghton, includes stars like Bhaichung Bhutia, Subrata Paul, Sunil Chetri and Steven Dias among others.

The national team project has been named 'Goal 2011' and has been approved by the AIFF executive committee. The project is likely to cost the AIFF around Rs 40 crore and set to kick-off in June 2009.
The aim of 'Goal 2011' is to keep the national team players together till the Asian finals and to play around 30 international matches in this period. All the players would be paid their salaries by the AIFF and some them will be "transfered" to Team India from their clubs, while their respective clubs will be paid "transfer fees".

'Goal 2011' is an ambitious plan by the AIFF to prepare the Indian national team for the AFC Asian Cup 2011, but may fail to excel due to the costs of such a project. The AIFF is hoping to rope in sponsors to invest the money into friendly matches, the salaries and all other expenses.

Sunil Chhetri on Leeds United (ENG) radar

Courtsey : Times Of India, 11th Oct 2008

Delhi boy Sunil Chhetri’s explosive performance for the national football team has got English League One club Leeds United interested.

A spurt of strong performances both for club and country and a recommendation from coach Bob Houghton was enough for Leeds to express their interest in the diminutive striker.

"It is flattering, but I am keeping my feet firmly on the ground," Chhetri, told TOI on Saturday.

In the past couple of months, the East Bengal striker has had several rounds of talks with agents in London, bringing him close to following in the footsteps of his idol, hero and strike partner Baichung Bhutia, who had played professional football for a couple of seasons for Bury FC, a second division English club.

At that time, Bhutia made about Rs 70 lakh per year, almost twice the amount of what the highest paid footballer in India, Brazilian Jose Baretto was earning.

Chhetri’s deal has been far from firmed up. "Nothing has been confirmed as yet but yes, I think I am close to getting there," said Chhetri, who has been a rage with the Indian team ever since he won coach Houghton’s confidence.

"Beyond India, not many are aware of our abilities so its imperative we park ourselves wherever we get a chance. We have to start from scratch, prove ourselves and then move forward," continued Chhetri, who overtook Bhutia as India’s highest paid footballer with a Rs 38-lakh annual contract.

The interest from Leeds United follows another offer letter from Estoril Praia, a second division league team from Portugal.

Officials of Estoril Praia watched Chhetri demolish a select Gouveia XI during the Indian team’s tour of Portugal but could not convince India’s highest paid footballer that a place in the Portuguese second division was his passport to European football.

Leeds United, though, is different. The English club is a big name in European football. They enjoyed their best season in 2001 when they made it to the semifinal of the UEFA Champions League until Valencia brought their European adventure to an end. Leeds are now competing in League One after they dropped to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history.

AFC Challenger Cup Triumph

The 4-1 convincing win in the final of the eight-nation AFC Challenge Cup over Tajikistan has earned India a place in the 2011 Asian Cup at Doha. This triumph is indeed indicative of the progress that our national soccer team has made with coach Bob Houghton at the helm of affairs since 2006 and has offered the team a chance to rub shoulders with the Asian football giants like South Korea, Japan and Saudi Arabia. Even as it was a splendid team effort that helped India tame the strong Central Asian team, striker Sunil Chhetri’s hat-trick stood out and made the difference at the end of the day. Needless to say that the Nehru Cup success, a year ago, marked the beginning of a revival of Indian football. Twenty-four years ago, there was a similar resurgence when under a Yugoslav coach, India with promising players in its repertoire, qualified for the Asian Cup. There was a ray of hope then that Indian football was not too far from emulating the feats attained by the players during the golden era of the 1950s-60s. Unfortunately, that was not to be and thanks to cricket taking centrestage, the beautiful game never lived up to its name in the country. Nevertheless, the fact that Indian football, today, is not just about captain Bhaichung Bhutia and his emergence as the sole star player, but also about a diminutive but fearless Chhetri and his goal-scoring abilities.

While the AFC Challenge Cup has since its inception in 2006 promoted lower-ranked teams of the Asian region and offered the winners an opportunity to take part in the elite league, it remains to be seen whether India can sustain a similar tempo at the Asian Cup three years down the line. The launch of the football league in Kolkata should help locate upcoming talents and similar professional leagues in other cities in future will woo more funds and followers for sure. Even as Indian football seems to have come of age, as some former greats have hinted, consistency would determine its progress apart from other factors like fitness levels of players, infrastructure at the grass-root levels and of course the pattern and standard of the system that promotes the game. Besides, the coach, who has been instrumental in sowing the seeds of revival, must be given a fair deal

India won AFC Challenge Cup 2008

Far away from the hustle and bustle of Olympics and about a single gold medal won by an Indian, the unsung heroes of Indian football piped Tajikistan 4-1 in the final match of AFC Challenge Cup that happened in New Delhi.

The final match was shifted to Ambedkar Stadium, New Delhi as the Gachibowli stadium in Hyderabad turned out to be a paddy field because of the continuous rains that belted in the city. As it is, the city did not deserve to hold the finals as hardly any fans turned up to the stadium to watch the tournament. Contrary to what happened in Hyderabad, the New Delhi stadium was filled with a huge number of well-wishers of Indian football, men and women as well.

There is nothing much to be written about the final match as India were already 3-0 up by 23 minutes through goals of Sunil Chhetri and Baichung Bhutia. Over all the team played with his full potential. Tajikistan too had their chances in the game, but they were too rattled to stage a come back in the match. Our defenders did quite well barring the occasional glitches that led to dangerous counter attacking by the Tajiks. The defense would have been much better, if we had Mahesh Gawli available, who is injured.

The midfielders had better day on the field and i am quite impressed by Meharajuddin Wadoo who came on as a substitute for N.P.Pradeep, who was seen quite rusty in the whole tournament. There is nothing much to talk about Steven Dias; his crosses and spot kicks were the highlight of this tournament. This man has a long way to go. I am still a bit apprehensive in praising Climax Lawrence, though he had a good game as the rest of the team members.

The forward line was quite exemplary yesterday with Chhetri pitching in with a hat-trick. Eventhough I am a Chhetri lover, I criticised him for his performance level in the group stages, but now, i think i will have to re-think on this. He did play very well, held the ball up, had good close control and scored 3 goals and this is a massive achievement for him as he is a shorty, nippy forward. Whatever you may say, Baichung undoubtedly is the trump card of India and he is so lively and remarkably flexible for his age. I hope we will have his service extended till the Asian Cup of 2011.

But I must say, the real hero in this tournament was Subrato Paul for me. He is an outstanding young goal keeper, who will grow in stature in the coming years. He is tall, brave and marvellously acrobatic in the goal. He was very influential through out the tournament and made some splendid saves through out the tournament. He seems to be a very calm and cool customer and i seriously wish that some international scouts pick him up, so that he can have a stint outside the country, which will help him massively.

By winning the AFC Challenge Cup we have sealed a berth in the 2011 Asian Cup happening in Qatar, by then we will have some more talented youngsters to choose from and they will offer serious contention for the current crop of players. Mind you, we have an U-16 team, who have blanked Asian Soccer power houses like Saudi Arabia and South Korea.

The media as always is beating drums for some Phelps & Dhonis who is of no importance to us. It took a bloody two hours for the websites of these illustrious beacons of our society to update and write a few lines about our football teams victory. Neither did i expect anything spectacular from them. There will be no victory parades in open buses, no endowments from the governments but Indian football will rally on; sad to say with a corrupt and inefficient man like Priyaranjan Das Munshi heading the ALL India Football Federation past 20 years for no reason.
